WORLD TOURISM DAY 2024 – TOURISM AND PEACE
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority is excited to announce the highly anticipated activities for the 2024 World Tourism Day, set to take place from September 27th to 29th in Sekondi, Western Region.
World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27th, aims to raise global awareness about the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political, and economic value. This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace”, emphasizes tourism’s role as a catalyst for peace and understanding, highlighting the relationship between tourism, cultural exchange, and conflict resolution. The 2024 celebration will also focus on the transformative power of sustainable tourism in creating jobs, fostering inclusion, and strengthening local economies.

World Tourism Day was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (now UN Tourism) in September 1979, with the first celebration in 1980. The date, September 27th, marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970, a significant milestone in global tourism.

GTA and Wanderlust Ghana to Embark on Epic 30,000km Overland Expedition!
Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime! The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is teaming up with Wanderlust Ghana for an exhilarating 30,000 km overland expedition. This incredible journey will kick off with a grand celebration at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park on Sunday, 8th September 2024.
Wanderlust Ghana, a dynamic group of Ghanaian adventure and tourism enthusiasts, is no stranger to epic journeys. After gaining international fame for their 2023 overland expedition from Accra to London, they are back with an even more ambitious plan. This time, about six intrepid explorers and a set of vehicles will traverse around 30 countries across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East over two thrilling months.
Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, couldn’t be more excited about this venture. He praised Wanderlust Ghana for their dedication to forging meaningful connections across continents.
Wanderlust Ghana is all about adventure, exploration, and making a difference. They are passionate storytellers, showcasing Ghana’s untapped potential and bridging cultures. Their journeys are more than just travel; they are about connecting people, places, and purposes. This expedition aims to shine a spotlight on Africa’s potential as a tourism and investment hub, sharing Ghana’s rich culture, vibrant history, and immense tourism potential with the world.

Ghana Tourism Authority Launches Tourism Month 2024
Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has officially launched the 2024 edition of “Tourism Month,” a nationwide initiative aimed at celebrating and promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant festivals. The launch event took place at the Jake Obetsebi Lamptey Hall, GTA Head Office, on August 31, 20241.
A Call to Explore Local Destinations
Speaking at the launch, Davies Opoku Ansah, Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, emphasized the significance of the initiative. Performing the launch on behalf of stakeholders, he encouraged Ghanaians to explore local destinations before considering international travel. “If you’re thinking of traveling to Dubai, then come to Kwahu first. Experience our wonderful weather and vibrant culture,” he stated.
Boosting Domestic Tourism
Tourism Month, observed every September, features a variety of tourism-related activities and events such as festivals, musical concerts, and tours. The initiative aims to boost domestic tourism by encouraging Ghanaians to patronize prominent festivals and visit tourist attractions across the country. This year’s theme, “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana,” seeks to raise awareness and enthusiasm among both the tourism sector and the general public3.
Economic Impact
Ben Anane Nsiah, Deputy Chief Executive of GTA, highlighted the economic benefits of festivals and events, noting that they attract visitors who spend money on accommodation, local foods, beverages, transport, and entertainment. This, in turn, boosts the local economy through revenue generation and job creation, especially for the youth.
Looking Ahead
The month-long celebration will culminate with the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s World Tourism Day on September 27 to be commemorated in Sekondi, in the Western Region.

GHANA TOURISM AUTHORITY (GTA) COMMISSIONS REHABILITATED SALAGA SLAVE MARKET AND SLAVE WELLS IN HISTORIC CEREMONY
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has marked a significant milestone with the commissioning of the Refurbished Salaga Slave Market and the Salaga slave wells.
The ceremony, held in Salaga, to kick-start Emancipation 2024 was graced by esteemed dignitaries including the Lepowura, representing the Kpembewura, the Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture, the MCE , the Board chairman of GTA , Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, the MP of the area and Directors of various agencies in the Savannah region.
Welcoming the guests, the MCE, Hon Richard Broni, thanked the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority for staying true to their word to redevelop the site when they visited the Kpembewura in 2023. In his address, the CEO of GTA , Mr. Akwasi Agyeman emphasized the importance of the Salaga Slave Market and the Wells to the nations Heritage Tourism offerings and stressed the need for Ghanaians to acknowledge our past while looking toward a future of healing and unity. Mr. Agyeman expressed his gratitude for the collaborative efforts that led to the restoration and preservation of these historical sites. He highlighted GTA’s commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural heritage.
Hon. Egyapa Mercer, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture delivered a powerful address, stressing the need to honor the memory of those who suffered during the transatlantic slave trade. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to promoting heritage tourism and fostering connections with the diaspora.
The Lepowura Bore-enasa I, speaking on behalf of the Kpembewura pledged the support of the Traditional Authority to preserving the site.
Ghana Tourism Authority To Unveil Salaga Slave Market To Kick-off 2024 Emancipation Day Celebration

The Ghana Tourism Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, proudly announces the commissioning of the Salaga Slave Market and Wells as a significant highlight of the 2024 Emancipation Day Celebration. From July 22nd to August 1st, 2024, Ghana will kindle the spirit of unity across the global African community.
Under the theme “UNITY AND RESILIENCE: BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE,” Emancipation 2024 will witness the unveiling of a transformed Salaga Slave Market—a poignant symbol of remembrance and healing. Honorable Andrew Egyapa Mercer, Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, will officiate the commissioning ceremony alongside Kpembe Wura Babanye Ndefosu II and Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority.

Afronita and Abigail: Britain’s Got Talent Stars Visit Tourism Authority
The dynamic duo Afronita and Abigail, who recently clinched the 2nd runners-up position in Britain’s Got Talent, made a special visit to the Ghana Tourism Authority. Their stellar performance on the international stage has elevated them to the status of proud ambassadors for Ghana.
During their meeting with Ghana Tourism Authority officials, they engaged in discussions with CEO, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman. Mr. Agyeman expressed heartfelt gratitude for their remarkable achievements and commended their representation of Ghana. He assured them of unwavering support for their artistic endeavors and presented them with thoughtful gift packs.
Accompanied by their parents, Afronita and Abigail radiated joy as they recounted their warm reception upon returning to Ghana. Last Monday, Kotoka International Airport buzzed with excitement as fans welcomed them back after their successful stint in the UK.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA is organizing the 2024 Emancipation Celebration from 22ND July to 1ST August 2024.
Emancipation Day is an annual event celebrated in Ghana to rekindle the flame of unity among black people everywhere.
The Emancipation Celebrations which is under the theme, ‘“UNITY AND RESILIENCE; BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE” has been launched at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park on 4th June, 2024.

Emancipation was originally celebrated in the Caribbean to commemorate the final abolition of Chatel Slavery in the British colonies on 1st August 1834, and has become an annual event in Ghana, the Black Star of Africa, and the gateway to the Homeland of people of African descent in the Diaspora.
GTA, PSWU, MOFA AND QUEEN MOTHERS FOUNDATION CELEBRATES ‘FEAST GHANA’ ON MAY DAY
The ‘Feast Ghana’ event which hosted about two thousand (2000) workers from various institutions in the Public Service to experience Ghana’s culture through food was climaxed at the Forecourt of the Accra International Conference Centre on 1st May, 2024.
The spectacular event was organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Public Service Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (PSWU of TUC), the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Queen Mothers Foundation.
Distinguished personalities from the public service, the diplomatic community and the traditional authority were present to witness the colourful and momentous occasion. The queen mothers were not left out as they graced the occasion in their colourful traditional regalia such as our prestigious kente and beads; each which tells a story about the Ghanaian culture.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman applauded the organisers of the “Feast Ghana’ for showcasing Ghana’s culture through food, music, and dance. According to him, this is in line with GTA’s “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Feel Ghana and Wear Ghana” campaign to promote domestic tourism.
However, this is a step in the right direction; and it will go a long way in promoting our local cuisine and culture thereby making Ghana the preferred cultural hub in the sub region.
The Feast Ghana PSWU May Day Grand celebration offered a display of Ghana’s diverse culinary landscapes with food stalls featuring dishes from various regions of the country. There were musical performances and concerts by Ghanaian artistes such as ‘Samini, Great Ampong, Naa Amanua of Wulomei’, among others; which gave a vibe of Ghana’s traditional, local music and dance.

GTA TO LAUNCH 2023 TOURISM REPORT
The Ghana Tourism Authority is pleased to announce the 2023 Tourism Report, which provides an in-depth of the tourism industry in Ghana on Monday, 29th April, 2024 at the Accra Tourist Information Center (ATIC).
The tourism report which is mostly based on primary data collection is a valuable resource to help our stakeholders better understand the contribution of tourism to the society and identify opportunities for growth.
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Ghana Tourism Authority has made concerted efforts to monitor the tourism statistics, and give important insights to assist in policy direction and decision making. This is in accordance with the Tourism Act 2011, Act 817 section(3)(m) which states that ‘the Authority shall collect, compile and publish information and statistics in respect of activities regulated under the Act’.
The Ghana Tourism Authority has been consistent in publishing tourism reports since 2019 with the specific objective to provide basic and important data on inbound tourism, data on licensed tourism enterprises and data on domestic tourism.
The 2023 tourism report titled ‘STRONG RECOVERY’ offers data and perspective for all stakeholders, academia and research institutions with data for teaching and learning.
It also serves as a good reference and resource point not only for the tourism industry but for the country to help in policy formulation.
