The Kwahu “O Kwahu!” Easter festivities originated as a simple tradition focused on family, community, and spiritual connection, long before the modern attractions of paragliding and media attention. The people of Kwahu have maintained a profound link to their ancestral mountainous towns in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Historically, the adage “kwahu fuor p3 adwuma” reflects the community’s desire to escape the oppression of the denchira king in the 1700s. Some interpretations of the name “Kwahu” relate to their defense tactics involving rolling rocks against enemies or signify their “independent” spirit.

Kwahu comprises several smaller states (Kowu, Akoawu, and Kodiabɛ), historically shielded from major conflicts due to their rugged terrain. As an Akan group, they share cultural and linguistic ties with the Ashanti and Akyem, practicing matrilineal inheritance. Known as resilient entrepreneurs, the Kwahus thrived in industries like rubber in the 19th century and later in retail.

Many Kwahus, while engaged in trade across Ghana and beyond, maintained strong familial ties to their home. Over time, as commercial activities shifted focus to busy periods like Christmas, the original traditional festivals lost prominence, making way for the annual celebration of Easter.

In 2005, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts saw a chance to build on this organic momentum. The Kwahu Easter homecoming, already a thriving cultural moment became the platform for something extraordinary: paragliding on the Odweanoma Ridge.
Introduced by the then Minister of Tourism after a tour of the Kwahu Ridge, the first Ghana Paragliding Festival was launched in 2005 as part of the Easter festivities, marking the start of what would become a major tourism highlight each year.

The Kwahu Easter celebration now includes:
