The Greater Accra Region, with its capital in Accra, serves as both the regional and national capital of Ghana. Accra, recognized as one of the safest cities in Africa, has served as Ghana’s capital since 1877. The older districts, Ushertown and Jamestown, display architecture spanning several centuries, featuring landmarks like the 17th-century Osu Castle and the Jamestown Lighthouse. Shai Hills Resource Reserve
Located about 50 km from Accra, the Shai Hills Resource Reserve is the nearest wildlife sanctuary, spread across 52 sq km of savanna. This conservation area plays a critical role in preserving Ghana’s natural heritage and is home to diverse wildlife, including 175 bird species, 31 mammal species, and 13 reptile species.
Visitors can also explore the Se Yo and Obonu Tem caves nestled within the rocky hills, along with remnants of the former Shai community that depicted its rich historical background.
