The Savannah Region is one of the newest regions of Ghana and the largest region in the country. The Savannah Region is bordered on the north by the Upper West region, on the west by the Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire international border, on the south by the Bono and Bono East regions, and on the west by the North East and Northern regions. Savannah region is made up of 7 districts.

Historical Context

The Gonja people have a rich history of chieftaincy and kingdom building. The region’s history is intertwined with the trans-Saharan trade routes and the spread of Islam.

Indigenous Architecture

Traditional round mud houses, with their flat roofs, are designed to provide cool and comfortable living spaces. These structures, adapted to the region’s climate, reflect the ingenuity of Savannah Region builders.

Languages

Gonja is the primary language, especially within the Gonja Kingdom. Other prominent languages include Vagla, Dagbani, and Mamprusi.
