About Reserve
Ankasa-Nini-Suhien National Park and Resource Reserve is situated close to the border town of Elubo, approximately a 1-hour 45-minute drive west of Takoradi. This 490 km² of intact wet evergreen forest is a zone of great botanical beauty and richness, with some 300 plant species per hectare. Its 43 mammal species include the bongo, forest elephants and 10 primate species, including the endemic Diana monkey and the endangered West African chimpanzee. Rich bird life includes parrots, hornbills, and the rare white-fronted guinea fowl. Indeed, the Ankasa Resource area has been designated as an international biosphere reserve to serve as a nature museum for research. Other interesting features in Ankasa are hiking trails, trees and twines of remarkable formation, river cascades, the “Bamboo Cathedral” and lodges constructed to make the visitor a bedfellow of nature. It has the unique vegetation and humid air of the jungle. The weather at the reserve is unpredictable, and tourists are advised to take along raincoats when visiting. It can also be visited from nearby beach resort areas such as Axim, Jewi Wharf, Elubo, Busua and Cape Three Points.
Tourist activities at Ankasa are game viewing, bird watching, hiking/nature walks, etc. Effective marketing of the reserve will attract more tourists to the region and will generate revenue for the local residents living in and around the community.
