Kintampo Waterfalls

Kintampo Waterfalls

Kintampo Waterfalls is one of the highest waterfalls in Ghana, located on the Pumpum River, a tributary of the Black Volta, about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) north of Kintampo municipality, on the Kumasi–Tamale road. The waterfalls, one of the main natural attractions in the area, are formed by three (3) main drops, with the longest measuring 25 metres (82 ft) in height. After several steps and cascades, the river drops about 70 meters (230 feet). It originated in a village called Pumpumatifi, about 10 kilometres from the waterfalls.

Kintampo Waterfalls is a beautiful cascading waterfall in Ghana. Also known as Sanders Falls during the colonial days, it is located on the Pumpum River, a tributary of the Black Volta, about 4 kilometres north of Kintampo municipality, on the Kumasi–Tamale road.

This seasonal fall is from the Pumpu River, which falls some 70 metres down beautiful rocky steps. The Kintampo Waterfalls have a more festive atmosphere, with lots of locals picnicking and plenty of shade where visitors and groups can sit and have fun. There are lots of trees, mostly mahogany, some of which grow to over 40 metres. Kintampo Falls is also a fine place to rest when travelling between Kumasi and Tamale or Mole National Park.

Nearby, in the town of Kintampo, is a small monument marking the geographic centre of Ghana.

Waterfalls Stage 1

  • Waterspouts in the large rock should have been formed by water eroding holes into it.
  • The falls are backed by a cave which houses a colony of bats.
  • The water disappears under the rocks and reappears 20 metres downstream.
  • The water flows throughout the year.
  • The volume of water increases with more visitors.
  • Please do not swim or bathe here.
  • Keep the surroundings clean.

Waterfalls Stage 2

  • The water tumbles down behind several large rocks.
  • The water disappears and reappears much wider at the base of the rocks.
  • No swimming or bathing here.
  • Keep the surroundings clean.

Waterfalls Stage 3

  • This stage has two staircases, one constructed to the main waterfalls in 1996 by Taysec. It was, however, rehabilitated by the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2017.
  • It has 153 steps coming up and a new 173 steps going down. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the waterfalls as you descend.
  • Do not sit or slide on the rail.
  • No refreshments, dining or smoking at the base of the falls.
  • You may swim or bathe at the base of the falls.

CAUTION: Slippery rock surfaces

Nkrumah Rock

Also at the falls is the rock on which it is believed the great Kwame Nkrumah sat to read and meditate. One unique thing about the rock is that it seems to be growing (expanding) with time.

New Addition

The attraction has seen several facelifts since its renovation. A canopy walkway has been added across the river overlooking the waterfall. A biplane construction aid is also underway to add to the visitor experience.
