The New Nationalism Park: A Symbol of Pride and Unity
The newly redeveloped Nationalism Park stands as a beacon of national pride and unity, blending history, culture, and modern aesthetics. Designed with a vibrant nightlife theme, the park features stunning lighting installations that create an enchanting ambiance after sunset.
At its heart is the “Koklozi le kpedzi” sculpture, an “Egg on Stone” monument surrounded by Adinkra symbols, which celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. Other attractions include:
- A Children’s Playground for family-friendly fun.
- A Restaurant and Snack Bar to cater to visitors.
- A Souvenir Shop to purchase keepsakes.
- Modern washrooms and serene sitting areas for relaxation.
A stroll through the park’s illuminated pathways evokes a profound sense of pride and connection to Ghana’s history.
A Historical Landmark
Located in Osu, between Independence Square and the Accra Sports Stadium, the Nationalism Park was originally opened in 2011 to honour those who fought for Ghana’s independence. The site previously featured an open lawn and the busts of three iconic heroes of the 1948 Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting, namely:
- Corporal Attipoe
- Sergeant Adjetey
- Private Odartey Lamptey
These brave individuals were killed by colonial forces during a peaceful protest for independence. Unfortunately, the site had fallen into neglect over the years, becoming overgrown and underutilized.
The Redevelopment
In a bid to enhance and preserve Ghana’s national monuments, the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, collaborated with the Osu Klottey Assembly and Humanlitech, a lighting company, to redevelop the park.
Key upgrades include:
- Enhanced lighting designs for a captivating nighttime experience.
- Fencing to ensure better management and security.
- Improved facilities for visitors like a new washroom and sitting areas.
- Children’s playground
- Several national symbols including quotes from National Anthem and Pledge
The Grand Reopening
The redevelopment project culminated in a grand commissioning ceremony, led by the President of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to mark the park’s rebirth as a modern cultural and historical attraction.
