About the Village

Amedzofe, is the highest habitable place in Ghana at more than 600 meters, is perched at the foot of Mt. Gemi. Visitors can hike up the mountain and to a lovely waterfall in the valley. The 4-meter-tall large cross on the top of Mt. Gemi was constructed by German missionaries in the 1930s, along with a church and a bell tower situated on one of the highest points in the village. Both the mountain and the church site offer dramatic views all the way to Lake Volta in clear weather.

A nice visitor centre with a small gift shop is placed in the centre of the village across from the main square and market. Relax in a chair on the shaded porch and have a cold drink while your guide helps you plan your tour.

Things to Do

• Hike the steep trail to the top of Mt. Gami and enjoy the fabulous 360-degree view. Note that visibility is often poor during the Harmattan season (November to March). Time: 1.5 hours. Difficulty: 3
• Descend from the village through farms to Amedzofe falls, stopping end route at a summer house with great views of the valley and adjacent villages. The last portion of the trails is very steep and has rope hand rails for safety. Time: 2 hours. Difficulty: 3
• Walk through the village and count the many steps to the old German church and its separate bell tower on the hilltop, before being rewarded with splendid views. Time: 30 minutes. Difficulty: 2

When to Visit

Early morning is the best time to climb Mt. Gemi, since it has no shade. The falls trail is partly shaded. Peak water levels in the falls are May through November and its volume may be greatly reduced or non-existent from January through March.

Accommodations, Food and Refreshments

The visitor centre has flush toilets and refreshments. Accommodation in Amedzofe is available either at one or two local guesthouses. Home stay and camping can also be arranged at the visitor centre. Food is available from the guesthouse or local chop bars.

Amedzofe is 35 km from Ho. From Ho, drive north to Matse and continue to the Dzolokpuita junction, turning right on the road and climbing to Vane and Amedzofe. Trotros/bus run infrequently from the Ho lorry station to Amedzofe. Alternatively, board a Trotro from Hoe to Hohoe and ask to be dropped off at Dzolokpuita and hike 8 km to Amedzofe.

Wander through the small local market on the main square and watch village men intently playing local board games. Check out the ancient chairs in the main square constructed of stone slabs.
